When to Use 4WD System in Colorado

If you have recently purchased a four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicle, chances are you don't want to get stuck in ice, snow, sand, or mud. The main purpose of 4WD is to help your Ford truck or SUV grip the road better. And here in Colorado, the weather conditions can sometimes be unpredictable, so there will be times you'll need to use it. But how do you know you need a engage your 4WD system?

When is a Good Time For me to Engage 4WD?

If your vehicle happens to slip or slide, it's a good time to engage 4WD. It's also recommended to use 4WD if you are climbing up a steep hill, taking your adventures off-roading, or you are traveling across uneven surfaces. Remember, once you engage 4WD, you may have lower gas mileage, so it's important to only do at an appropriate time.

It's also great to know the difference between 4-High and 4-Low, and when to use each one.

What You Need to Know About 4-High

  • Allows you to drive your vehicle drive at fast speeds
  • Good for snow, ice, mud, rocky roads and other slippery conditions
  • Will provide better traction
  • May use this setting more than 4-Low

What You Need to Know About 4-Low

  • Used to provide your truck or SUV with more torque
  • Important to keep the vehicle at low speeds - under 10 mph
  • This setting is ideal for heavy snow, deep water, or steep inclines

Before you switch gears, you are going to want to make sure your vehicle is in neutral. 4-High lets your vehicle drive at fast speeds and will provide better traction. There's a chance you may use this setting more than 4-Low. 4-Low is used to provide your truck or SUV with more torque. This setting is ideal for heavy snow or slippery surfaces.

Traction/Stability Control

The thing is, you don't need to depend on a computer to decide you need traction control, and most of our new models already come with a traction/stability control feature. The system will turn on as soon as you start your vehicle. Traction/stability control is excellent in if you're driving and come across a part of the road that is slick because it will try to keep your tires from spinning. If you happen to get stuck, traction/stability control will not help the situation. Turning off traction/stability control is different for each vehicle, so be sure to check your owner's manual for more information.
