Who Needs a Colorado State Emissions Test?

Colorado state emissions testing may come as a requirement if you live in one of the following counties:

• Boulder
• Broomfield
• Denver
• Douglas
• Jefferson

Parts of Adams, Larimar, Arapahoe, and Weld counties may require emissions testing as well.

If you live in one of these counties and your vehicle is more than seven years old, it must receive an emissions test once every two years. If you meet this criteria and you sell your Ford, whomever picks up the deed may need to have it tested again. There are only a few exceptions to emissions testing:

• Vehicles seven years old or newer
• All-Electric cars
• Collector vehicles from 1975 or older
• Farm vehicles, horseless carriages, kit cars, and motorcycles

What Happens in a Colorado Emissions Test?

Colorado state administrators register several different types of tests, in accordance with different types of qualifying vehicles. The most common is the onboard diagnostics test, for gas/hybrid vehicles between eight and 11 years old. If you drive a Ford hybrid, yours may come due for a RapidScreen Roadside test, which tends to move much quicker.
